Hate hate computers till your Daddy takes the T-Bird away... [Aug. 16th, 2005|07:20 pm]

Okay, this is getting stupid. My DVD burner is dead! This is my second or third optical drive which has expired within the past 12 months. Plextor asked me to mail it out to them, so hopefully that means they'll replace it with no charge. This means I probably will have to wait at least two months before I have a working optical drive again. However, this is better than the reaction I received from Sony when my other DVDRW drive broke in February- "Call back when you find the receipt."

Poll #553365 Suggestions

Should I....

Start saving up for a Mac? PC hardware is always screwing up on you. Perhaps Apple hardware will just work.
Move the computer into the cool basement? The DVDRW smelled like burning when I removed it. Note that this option doesn't exist. It would take 30 man-years to clear out the basement sufficiently for a human habitation.
Make my room cooler so the computer doesn't fry. Please note that this option doesn't exist either. If I set up an AC or something of similar wattage in here, it would definitely be a fire hazard.
Give up on technology? This would involve moving deep into a forest, bringing only a shotgun and ax with me. Tresspassers will be shot or axed.

I bet you'll have good luck with Plextor. They're expensive, but top-notch from everything I've heard.

Have you considered picking up a new PSU? Bad power can cause all sorts of intermittent problems. It's really odd to have so many drives fail in such a short time period.

"hate computers" is my mantra, please do not steal it. :D Give up on technology.

I don't think Mac hardware is any better than good quality PC stuff.

Not all the drives failed spontaniously.. the last one broke because I knocked the open tray just enough that it wouldn't open or close anymore. :)

But looking into the PSU could be a good idea. I lived in a building for a while that had a very dirty power source. After it fried a motherboard, I made sure the box was plugged into a UPS from then on, but it is possible that something bad happened before then. Is it difficult to replace the PSU? I never saw an obvious way to remove them, but I wasn't looking for one.

Google has 47,300 hits for "hate computers", so don't claim exclusivity over the mantra quite yet. ;-)

You're probably correct about Mac hardware. Maybe I was just looking for an excuse to buy an overpriced computer. ;)

Is your case a regular ATX one? There should be 4 screws around the power supply and fan area. Remove them and it usually slides right out.

Maybe I was just looking for an excuse to buy an overpriced computer. ;)

Hey! I resemble that remark! :D I'm very happy with my mini, but it's pricey considering its mediocre performance.
